Flesh Mapping with Sylvia Richardson
Flesh Mapping with Sylvia Richardson
Imagine working on a podcast that discussed issues on environment, society, and politics for over a decade. Imagine if the podcast was discussed with authenticity and focused on finding the perspectives of those who are at the front line. For over a decade, Sylvia Richardson has done just that.
I first found out about Latin Waves Media when researching what is out there in terms of the podcast talking about the stories and people who are experiencing the worst effects of climate change. I quickly became a fan of her work.
Flesh Mapping
Sylvia is not only a podcast host. Today you can find Sylvia as a professor at Simon Fraser University, but her journey is full of lessons and inspiration.
“Self-locating” is how she describes her book, Flesh Mapping, a connection to yourself, and a connection to one another. In her book, she invites you to map your journey, so that you know where you have lost some of your pieces.
A Journey from Fear to Love
When I began this conversation with Sylvia I asked her to introduce herself, and as she tiptoed from the different hats that she wears, she culminated by stating “I am love”
Art making is a way of being. We can make art out of our life, whatever the challenges, we can overcome when we learn to trust ourselves and walk with others. Community is immunity.
Another World is Possible
Latin Waves Media to me is a sister channel. What stood out that both shows share is our curiosity for language, and how it shapes the narrative.
If you listen to our conversation, you will hear Sylvia catch me. When I asked “what city are you in right now?” she gave me a gift. She was located in Squamish natives peoples territory, “some call it Vancouver BC”.
“People hide behind words” Sylvia stated midway through our conversation. “If this is your land, where are your stories?”
A Special Message to You
The following is a special message that Sylvia wanted to share with you:
“I hope your audience may remember one thing, We are powerful!. We are not what happens to us, we are what we make with what happened to us, the stories like scientific methods are a way of knowing, or exploration and inquiry.”
Sylvia Richardson
Sylvia Richardson Ph.D. is the host of Latin Waves Media. She is a Visual Artist, and author of Flesh Mapping Cartography of Struggle Renewal and Hope in Education. Be sure to check out her work!
While you are here
Hey, Alfredo here. I hope you all are enjoying these conversations. I wanted to let you know that I am going to start using Patreon for the podcast.
My intent with this show is to create content that creates good, by changing the mainstream narrative around climate change.
I would love it if you could be part of my community on Patreon because it will help me continue to generate this content. You will get access to the full conversations, behind the scenes, and maybe even a little gift.
What did you think of the conversation? Why do you think carbon catalyzes or inhibits the change in narrative? I would love to hear below!
